This article explains how to upgrade Wordpress, the content management system the website uses as of 2010.
Note: This guide is a bit old, though it gives a step by step method of how to upgrade.
It is highly recommended that the upgrade instructions provided by Wordpress should always be used over these instructions. Their site will be more up to date and feature some things not included here.
Updating Wordpress
- Before commencing the update of Wordpress, first it is good practice to download a copy of the Wordpress files.
- From the Dashboard, click "BackUpWordPress" at the bottom of the left navigation bar.
- From the table, click "Download" on the row of the latest backup.
- Once the file is finished downloading, you're ready to begin to upgrade.
- To begin upgrading, first you must make your way to the upgrade page. This can be accomplished by either clicking the link at the top of every Wordpress Admin page informing you to upgrade or by selecting Tools in the left hand navigation bar and then "Upgrade".
- From the page you have two options.
- Upgrade Automatically
- Click the corresponding button.
- Fill out the FTP information, and click "Proceed". After this, you will be waiting a bit. Don't close anything.
- This option may fail, but if it works - yipee! Life is easy. If not, just goto the Upgrade Manually instructions.
- Upgrade Manually
- Click the corresponding button to download the latest version of Wordpress. This should begin the download of the newest version of Wordpress onto your desktop.
- Extract the files.
- Using FTP, connect to the PRHS Robotics website and navigate to the wordpress directory.
- As of 2010, this is located in /public_html/team
- Copy the new Wordpress files onto the server. Make sure to choose to merge folders, not overwrite (some folders may contain images and other uploaded files).
- Don't delete wp-config.php!
- Once the upload is done, navigate to the Wordpress Admin page. It may prompt you to upgrade the database. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
- Upgrade Automatically
- Once you're back to the normal Wordpress Admin Dashboard, life is good. You should be using the latest version of Wordpress.
