When faced with the issue of how to chain two or more sprockets together on a robot, often times there will not be chain of a specific length that will work with the current setup.

The only way to get chain to fit onto two or more sprockets is to break the chain to be shorter or longer. Breaking chain is different though similar for both #25 and #35 chain.

General Chain Overview

To break chain, one must have an understanding of how chain works.

Each length of chain is made up of separate individual links. Each chain link contains pins and plates. Some chain links are removable (i.e. - separable) and some are permanently linked together.

The chain links that are separable are called master links which contain a few more parts than to allow the link to be removed. A master link contains:

  • Chain Link
  • Removable Plate
  • Removable Retaining Clip
